A bend in the river pdf

In Africa when the European took power from African people, the Arabs and the Indians also became colonial subject to Europe. As the part of their strategic game the Europeans treated the Arabs and the Indians in different manner than the Africans.

Secondly, they were non-natives, because they were less threatening to the colonizers than the natives, on the basis of which they enjoy privileges that the colonizers denies the native proper.

But they are natives because they are excluded from certain economic and political privileges that are reserved for the colonizers.

Later this confusion about their appropriate identity raised great problems for the non-natives. However, the Europeans also had to give up their power as the Arabs had once. By the last line Salim actually mean that the minds of the people were never free from the slavery. Once the Arabs and Europeans used their power over them now there would be someone else. The power struggle continued among the power hungry people but the life of the people never changed.

Power is a continual process and shifts from one hand to other hand. In the novel the protagonist Salim saw very soon that the Arabs losing their power as well. He realizes that power is not something which is stable. He says, I was worried for the Arabs. I was also worried for us. Because so far as power went, there was no difference between the Arabs and ourselves.

We were both small groups living under a European flag at the edge of the continent. In our family house when I was a child I never heard a discussion about our future or the future of the coast.

Therefore, in that time the Arabs and the Indians were so helpless and powerless that they started to feel that they do not belong anywhere. One of the main reasons of the non-natives losing power was that they did not have any political influence in the country. They were only economically involved and busy with themselves which was can also see in the novel.

All these incidents and uprising happening in the country made Salim as well as others realize that to survive they must have power to control their faith. Some characters like Salim and Mahesh saw this power in money making and characters like Indar and Ferdinand saw it in embracing western culture and education. Another non-native native couple Mashesh and shoba also related to Salim and their ancestors also came from India.

Through them the author wants to present the power of consumerism in the new born Africa. Mahesh, who was a motor mechanic in the past, starts to do different kinds of business to be stable in the city. He searched for a way which can bring him both money and power. This shop was totally based on European franchise. Surprisingly his business started to run well. When he returns from London to Africa he finds that his shop was taken by government and to earn more money he starts to do illegal business with Ivory and gold.

All his activities like Mahesh were also for money and power which would grunt him security in the chaotic situation of the country. Unfortunately, both Mahesh and Salim failed to hold on to the power they managed to hold on to.

Mahesh in the fear of his in-laws flees from the city and Salim was arrested by the police for doing illegal business. Power is also celebrated by another two characters Ferdinand and Indar. Indar, friend of Salim from the East coast was a young man who also became aware of the loss of power of his as well as other foreign families.

However, he was more concern about his life and position and decides to go to London in purpose of higher education. Like everyone else in the country he also believed that true power holds in European culture and education. Indar thought that by educating himself with European culture and education he would be able to escape his doomed fate.

Unfortunately, outside Africa he was no one and was treated as a person of two worlds. Thus, he took the job of a diplomat and returned to Africa.

Again, he decides to leave Africa and return to London where he would not be treated especially at all. Ferdinand on the other hand is an African son of Zabeth who considered himself as the new generation of Africa. Uncertain of his future, he has come to take possession of a local trading post he has naively purchased sight unseen.

But what Salim discovers on his arrival is a ghost town, reduced to ruins in the wake of the recently departed European colonizers and in the process of being reclaimed by the surrounding forest.

Salim struggles to build his business against a backdrop of growing chaos, conflict, ignorance, and poverty. His is a journey into the heart of Africa, into the same territory explored by Joseph Conrad's Heart of Darkness nearly eighty years earlier--but witnessed this time from the other side of the tragedy of colonization.

Salim discovers that the nation's violent legacy persists, through the rise of a dictator who calls himself the people's savior but whose regime is built on fear and lies.
