Campus departments, student organizations and external groups frequently purchase merchandise that use University symbols, logos and marks such as t-shirts, water bottles, mugs, etc. The easiest and most efficient way to have your product approved and produced is to use a licensed vendor.

These licensed vendors pay for the right to produce ODU items, so they carry appropriate liability insurance, know our policies concerning appropriate use of trademarks, can often create designs that will be approved, know whom to contact at the University regarding questions and approvals, and take care of submitting royalties that support a range of needs from scholarships to athletics.

Restrictions Athletic marks, including the SC interlock, is restricted for use by the Athletic Department only. Band marks, including the band Trojan head, is restricted for use by the Trojan Marching Band only. During this review it is determined whether the applicant is approved to proceed to next steps in the licensing process. Assuming this information is adequately provided, then the applicant is provided with a non-binding terms sheet outlining the general format of the potential license agreement.

A license agreement is only issued once the above steps have been followed and the terms sheet has been accepted. The following requirements must be met before the license agreement can be fully executed. Upon receipt of the signed agreement, advance payment, and proof of insurance, TLS will provide artwork, royalty report forms and a signed copy of the license agreement.

To keep a license in good standing, all licensees must submit artwork and samples for TLS approval prior to production, as specified in the license agreement. Royalty rates vary per licensing agreement.

Report and pay royalties quarterly. The royalty report deadline is 30 days following the end of each calendar quarter.
